In a job completed during November - December 1997 in a CIS Republic, Amchem supplied and applied Purethane® 386/9000 , 100% Solids Polyurethane Coating on site on a 40" Buried Gas Pipeline.

Factors that influenced the selection of Purethane® 386/9000 for the job were the excellent impact and abrasion resistance of Purethane® 386/9000 combined with unsurpassed corrosion protection.

The job was successfully completed despite severe weather conditions ( - 15o C temperatures ) due to the excellent application and cure characteristics of Purethane® 386/9000, as well as technical know how of Amchem personnel. At sub zero temperatures, microscopic ice particles on the steel substrate can severely compromise the adhesion of coatings. To prevent this from happening, the 2,500 feet long pipeline was heated prior to coating to a temperature of + 5 C using an aircraft jet engine !

The pipe was installed under the river using the horizontal boring method.

As can be seen from the picture below, there was no damage to Purethane® 386/9000 after the pipe was pulled through. The bright and shiny pull head that was welded to the front of the pipe indicates the abrasion withstood by Purethane® 386/9000.
